Innovative technology specifically designed to efficiently remove water from diesel, is now available in South Africa. Tank Snakes are water absorbers for diesel and have been used successfully in the US for almost 20 years.
Water in a diesel tank usually emanates from condensate resulting from a change in temperature, which can occur between day and night or after operation of a diesel engine that increases fuel temperature.
Corrosion is one of the main problems caused by water in steel tanks, but so-called ‘diesel algae’ can also start to grow if water is left in tanks. If not eliminated, diesel algae will continue to multiply and when the equipment is run, it will be sucked into the fuel filter causing it to block and damage the engine.
Tanks and equipment that are not in regular use have an even higher risk of problems caused by water ingress. Removing any condensate as soon as it occurs is the best way to prevent these problems.
Tank Snake hoses are available in a range of sizes and are colour-coded for specific applications, as follows:
- Yellow Tank Snakes remove water and salt water, suitable for various tank sizes and are used once-off for immediate water absorption.
- Black, Red and White Snakes continuously remove water and rust, using neodymium magnets that collect rust and metal particles, and help eliminate microbial growth. The hoses are replaced when dirty, damaged or after approximately ten uses. Red Snakes are suitable for smaller plants and equipment, Black Snakes are used in small, medium-sized and large storage tanks and White Snakes are suited to heavy duty applications.
Tank Snakes can be used to prevent the buildup of water in a variety of diesel storage tanks, bulk-to-farm tanks, day tanks, small diesel transfer tanks, generator sets, and on mobile equipment.
