FNB and Visa have completed the roll-out of tap-and-go payment technology across select toll gates ahead of the December holidays.
Motorists at select toll plazas along the N3, TRAC N4 and Chapman’s Peak (Cape Town) toll roads are now able to use a variety of contactless payment methods.
More than 88 lanes have been switched on along the N3 toll route between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, at De Hoek, Wilge, Tugela and Mooi River plazas, as well as the various on- and off-ramps.
An additional 73 lanes have had tap payment terminals installed along the N4 toll route between Pretoria and Mozambique, at Diamond Hill, Middelburg, Machado and Nkomazi plazas, as well as the on- and off-ramps.
The payment solution offers enhanced security, as it allows users to keep their cards or payment devices in their possession during the payment process.
Motorists at the tap-and-go-enabled toll plazas will be able to use tap-enabled debit or credit cards (Europay, Mastercard, Visa); payment apps such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay; wearables such as Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Apple and others; as well as other tap-enabled apps that allow the use of South African-issued bank cards.
Foreign cards will now also be accepted at South African toll plazas.
Magstripe cards, which require the payment card to be physically swiped and which are being phased out, will no longer be accepted at tap-and-go toll plazas from December 1.
The South African National Roads Agency and the other various toll concessionaires will only continue to accept magstripe payments until May 31, next year, on the country’s other toll routes.
Fleet and garage magstripe cards can still be used until June 30, 2026.
FNB says more than 50% of card payments made by its customers are now contactless.
The rollout of the FNB solution will expand to additional toll road concessionaires next year.
