There is little question that the steel industry is taking strain globally, owing to too much supply chasing too little demand. In South Africa, however, an anomalous situation has arisen: prices are recovering and there are even shortages of some long-steel products. Unless well managed, the pressure domestically could shift from the steelmakers to downstream consumers.
