Residents of Fort McMurray, in Alberta, Canada, began returning home this month and companies started resuming operations after wildfires forced the evacuation of more than 80 000 people from the town. The fire destroyed entire neighbourhoods and seriously affected oil and gas production. First spotted on May 1, they have burned for weeks, with nearly 300 South African firefighters having been involved in efforts to quell them. Above is a photo of some of the trees burned at Gregoire Lake, near Fort McMurray.
