Gauteng-headquartered Powermite, which has been operational since 1967, manufactures products for moving and rotating machinery, as well as cable, industrial plugs and sockets, mining connectors and lighting systems.
Ampco merged with Powermite in the early 70’s adding a full range of industrial plugs and sockets to the fold. In 2013 Proof/Azolite was acquired into the group, this time adding a full range of mining connectors and lighting systems into the group. We currently employ 220 people and now form part of the Hudaco group of companies.
The complete product range includes cable reeling drums, conductor systems, festoon systems, drag chains, DSL systems, Stromag clutches, Geisman controllers and the Lasstec container systems. The round and flexible cable manufactured by the company is used in mining, industrial, ship wiring and agricultural applications and includes the new range of reflective TPU flexible mining cable.
The industrial plugs range from 230 V to 500 V and 16 A to 125 A, and the mining connectors from 1.1 kV to 35 kV and 120 A to 800 A. The lighting systems include light-emitting diode systems for both flameproof and non-flameproof applications and range from 12 V to 220 V, with lengths of 2 ft, 4 ft and 5 ft.
Powermite has branches in Durban, Cape Town, Rustenburg and Witbank. This national distribution network enables the company to offer the best possible service delivery to its customers countrywide. Powermite is ISO9001 accredited and is in the process of acquiring OHSAS 18001 certification, with ISO 14001 expected to be attained soon.
The industrial plugs and sockets carry the MASC certification, while the mining connectors carry the SABS certification of approval. Some of the mining product lines also have Atex approval in addition to the above.
Comments a spokesperson for the company: “We deal with the major project houses and have received substantial contracts for the supply of reel equipment, cable and connectors, both locally and throughout Africa.”
