JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Clashes between rival unions at Northam Platinum's Zondereinde mine, in Limpopo, on Monday, claimed the life of a second mine employee.
Northam Platinum on Monday morning temporarily suspended operations at the mine following acts of violence and intimidation after one of the mine’s employees had been killed in the town of Northam, located about 20 km from the mine, on Sunday. The assailant and motive for the killing were unknown.
Violent incidents at and near the mine had "reduced significantly" by Monday afternoon and the company's management was expected to meet with union representatives and members of the South African Police Service to resolve the impasse and ensure that operations resume as soon as is practicably possible.
