Ongoing research and development into the formulation and manufacture of paint is leading to a range of new advancements, such as odourless paint, paint that helps to combat algae and mould build-up and paint that helps facilitate the safe harvesting of rainwater.
Plascon affirms that the continuous improvement of its products through technology has pioneered several changes in paint coatings. Its range is developed and tested at the company’s research and development centre and it also benefits from global insights and advances from its parent company, Kansai Paint, which has interests in Japan, India and Africa.
Plascon’s Cashmere, Double Velvet Pure and Kitchens and Bathrooms range are all formulated with the company’s patented Silver Protect silver additives, designed to keep walls cleaner for longer, improve stain resistance and reduce mould and algae formation.
The range also uses the company’s Breatheasy technology, which results in paint with almost no odour, minimising adverse effects such as eye, nose and throat irritation and headaches that often result from breathing in paint vapours. The paint range also has no lead or volatile organic compounds, further improving safety standards for consumers’ health and the environment.
Plascon Cashmere features Triple Action Bead technology, a special additive in the paint responsible for the dispersion of light. The technology is designed to ensure a plush matt finish which can hide plaster imperfections in the wall and forming a protective barrier that maintains an absolute matt finish over time, even with regular wiping.
Plascon Nuroof Cool includes the Enviroshield formulation with ultraviolet (UV) protection and infrared reflective technology. The formulation is designed to minimise the effect of the sun’s heat, resulting in cooler roof surfaces. Lower roof temperatures mean less stress and strain on the coating, promoting longer roof life. It also cools the interior of the building, which can lead to energy savings and further environment-friendly benefits.
Plascon Velvaglo is formulated with a water-based acrylic hybrid called Aquatough, which is designed to offer the toughness of a solvent-based enamel, such as UV, flaking and stain resistance, with non-drip properties, while also being environment friendly and non-toxic.
The company has also launched major upgrades to two of its well-known brands: Plascon Micatex, now with Polycell Technology, and Plascon Double Velvet Pure, now with Air Purifying Technology.
Plascon Micatex with Weathertough is now available with Polycell Polyfilla Fine Crack Filler, which covers hairline cracks and prevents the inflow of water which can cause damp, premature colour fading or cracking and peeling of the paint. With twice the film thickness compared to conventional paints, the company asserts that its Micatex also boasts mica for stretch and marble for strength.
Plascon highlights that it has pioneered a first for the South African market: A paint with Air Purifying technology. Plascon Double Velvet Pure is designed to actively improve the quality of indoor air by removing formaldehyde from the air ensuring a safer work and home environment. A special compound in the formula removes and permanently transforms formaldehyde in the air into undetectable, harmless water vapour, which is safe for breathing.
