Science and technology company 3M South Africa has launched its new mobile workshop – Abrasive Solutions On the Move – which will provide easy access to its technologies and services for its original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) clients in the automotive sector.
Launched in August, the modified van includes a full test laboratory, training facilities and capabilities for providing all of 3M’s abrasive solutions. The unit – the first of its kind in South Africa – will function as a mobile consultation and demonstration workshop, which will enable 3M to provide on-site tests of its technology according to client-specific requirements, as well as client training of up to five people at a time.
“The main objective of the mobile unit is to help 3M enhance its market penetration in the automotive market sector, providing real-time demonstrations of how our solutions can help to advance customers production processes, says 3M South Africa key accounts manager Maria Marquez.
She highlights that the mobile teams will, moreover, be equipped to perform demonstrations, offer advice and secure orders, as well as perform on-site training. The first unit will service 3M’s customers in Gauteng, with development of further units for KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape planned as demand for the service grows.
Advanced Aesthetics
In February, 3M, moreover, introduced eight new premium graphic film products that offer design flexibility and enable creativity for those wanting to add a decorative element to their cars. The new options feature the first wrappable reflective, transparent and metallic films, as well as adhesives with microtechnology, and are all issued with a warranty and performance guarantee.
“3M print wrap films lay a quality foundation for eye-catching wrap projects that leave a lasting impression. Our new films stretch the limits of creativity and offer enhanced installation benefits,” says 3M print wrap films global marketing manager Adam Larson.
The 3M print wrap film IJ180mC-10 is a go-to film for clients that covers broad application needs. The added feature of Comply Adhesive, with microtechnology, has advanced the product with the technology’s high-quality benefits, which include optimised initial tack, fine-tuned slideability, easier liner release and a nonvisible adhesive pattern for a smooth, bubble-free appearance.
Expanding the versatility of the IJ180 family, 3M also introduced the first clear and metallic wrappable print film options: IJ180mC-114 and IJ180mC-120. The company now offers the surface-specific IJ180C-10LSE and IJ180-10SLS films, designed for low-surface energy plastic and stainless steel surfaces respectively.
The industry’s first wrappable reflective film, the 3M Scotchlite print wrap film 780mC-10R, is further engineered with wider retroreflective viewing angles, and features increased conformability and heat-recovery properties. This film stands up to the rigorous vehicle wrapping process, which includes repositioning, elongation and conforming, with little to no bruising.
Meanwhile, 3M Envision print wrap films SV480mC and LX480mC now also feature Comply Adhesive with microtechnology. These high-performing films have a sustainable edge, offer 150% stretch without primer and are compatible with all printers.
“This suite of products simplifies the film selection process. We have made it easier to choose and install the right product for each project. Now customers can experiment with design options and confidently take on any request,” concludes 3M graphics market international technical service manager Mike Stavreff.
