Metal supplier Swiss Steel Group has successfully launched a new variant of stainless steel that meets the highest ecological standards: Green Steel Stainless+.
“This innovative solution demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and the protection of the environment,” the company states.
Green Steel Stainless+ is characterised by its “outstanding” properties as, depending on the requirement profile, it is corrosion and heat resistant, offers “excellent” mechanical properties and is non-magnetic.
Additionally, it is aesthetically pleasing, and its visual and architectural advantages make it particularly attractive for a plethora of applications. Some of these applications include input material for the construction and automotive industries, as well as in the manufacture of household appliances and medical and aerospace equipment and technologies.
Swiss Steel Group notes that the production of corrosion-resistant steel requires the use of ferroalloys, the exact quantities of which depend on the requirement profile. “The exploitation of these raw material sources has a direct impact on the planet particularly through the consumption of natural resources and energy.”
Fortunately, thanks to electric arc furnace technology, the Swiss Steel Group can use scrap as its main input material, but the production of stainless steel from scrap requires strict sorting.
At Swiss Steel Group subsidiary, Ugitech, the average recycling rate in 2023 was an ‘impressive’ 77.4%. This comprises new scrap – internal scrap and production scrap – and old scrap, that is, post-consumer scrap.
It should be noted that Green Steel Stainless+ is produced in accordance with International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standard ISO 14021, with over 95% recycled material.
“Our scrap is carefully sourced and sorted mainly from Europe. These measures have enabled us to reduce Scope 3 emissions for the Stainless+ by over 75%, and the CO2 footprint is around 1 t CO2e per ton of steel supplied,” states Swiss Steel Group.
The introduction of Green Steel Stainless+ represents a significant step in the company’s efforts to offer more environment-friendly and sustainable products. The company is proud to meet the needs of its customers while protecting the planet.
