Pork products supplier Lynca Meats has, since December, been able to streamline its storage, handling and distribution logistics without the need for double handling and storing through a third party.
The company’s 2 000 m2 warehouse, in Meyerton, Johannesburg, has been equipped with an on-site cold storage facility to store its pork products by warehouse designer APC Storage Solutions SA.
“This will enable us to better control our stock and to also provide an improved service for our customers,” says Lynca Meats GM Andrè Snyman.
The storage solution includes a mobile racking system, Movirack, and two articulated forklifts that store and retrieve the 5 500 pallets accommodated in the warehouse.
Movirack, designed, supplied, installed and commissioned by APC Storage Solutions SA, is a mobile racking system consisting of two blocks of ten and seven bases, as well as two additional back-to-back conventional racking systems. In both systems, the racks are configured to seven bays in length, six levels high, with each bay holding three pallets.
On the materials handling side, APC Storage Solutions SA supplied two Aisle Master articulated forklifts that are ideal for operation within narrow aisles. The forklifts are provided under a full-maintenance rental package from APC Storage Solutions SA’s materials handling division, Integrated Handling Solutions (IHS) Forklifts.
“APC Storage Solutions SA is giving us an integrated storage solution service that, in addition to the provision of mobile racking and the materials handling equipment, includes a sizing study that determines the most efficient process flow of stowed items,” says Snyman.
He adds that the facility has been tailored to the operational storage and throughput capacity required for the pork products. He also says the level of after-sales service, including support and product guarantees, was another major factor in choosing to partner with APC Storage Solutions SA.
Phase 2 of the project includes the installation of an additional four mobile bases to provide storage for an additional 1 040 pallets. The embedded rails for these bases have already been cast, ensuring a seamless transition and implementation of this phase of the project, says Snyman.
