A new language-learning application (app) aims to help South Africans build the confidence and skills to communicate with each other in their mother tongue.
The Ambani gaming app is aimed at foundation phase learners and offers instruction in six different languages, with isiZulu proving most popular. The lessons are designed to be fun and educational, focussing on various themes and games. Users range from young children and parents of learners switching from mother-tongue to English as a medium of instruction, South Africans living abroad who want their children to learn about their cultural heritage and language, children who are required to learn an African language at school and ordinary South Africans wanting to acquire a basic proficiency in an additional language.
The Ambani gamified app won the 2021 Best Gaming Solution in MTN’s Business App of the year competition and currently has over 7 000 active users. The app was developed by Mukundi Lambani, who holds a master’s degree in creative technology, with a focus on ‘augmented reality’, and who has a background in the film industry and experience in teaching English as a second language in Korea. Lambani says that there are plans to develop language courses for learners at higher levels, including university level.
MTN Business head of marketing Kholofelo Magagane explains that the MTN Business app of the year competition aims to attract local entrepreneurs and those wanting to launch start-ups and app-based products and services.
