NYSE-listed satellite operator Intelsat and communications service company Gondwana International Networks have teamed up to deliver managed broadband Internet services across sub-Saharan Africa.
The parties aimed to provide high-quality, Ku-band broadband services on a virtual network operator (VNO) basis, with Intelsat responsible for satellite services through Intelsat 28, and Gondwana providing ground support and network management services through subsidiary AfricaOnline’s facilities at Hartebeesthoek, in South Africa.
“The VNO platform leverages Intelsat’s extensive service infrastructure and Gondwana’s network management expertise to facilitate easier deployment of Ku-band very small aperture terminal (VSAT) services,” the duo said in a statement on Monday.
Combining Intelsat’s Ku-band satellite solutions with AfricaOnline’s ground segment services through a VNO platform reduced large upfront capital commitments, as well as operational costs, and allowed for greater economies of scale.
The move was also expected to foster business development, enhance medical and educational services to local communities, provide critical backup support during times of crisis and unlock communications services for citizens across the continent.
“This is beneficial to VSAT operators, distributors and end-users alike and allows VSAT operators to focus on marketing, service provisioning, support, and their customers, and not on network infrastructure,” said Gondwana International Networks CEO Mathew Welthagen.
“Our partnership with AfricaOnline and Gondwana International Networks will provide millions of people working in sub-Saharan African businesses with access to high-quality and affordable Internet service,” concluded Intelsat sales and marketing senior VP Kurt Riegelman.
