Fluor is a global engineering, procurement and construction company with more than 60 000 employees on six continents providing services in the energy & chemicals, government, industrial, infrastructure, mining and power market sectors.
“The company realised that years of experience can be lost due to employees retiring or leaving the industry, unless these years of experience and skills are transferred to the next generation of employees entering the company’s growing workforce,” said Jenny Wesson, Fluor South Africa Training Development Manager.
This was a major motivation in the creation of the virtual Fluor University which consists of Five Colleges. Programmes within these Five Colleges group various functional learning activities which include courses, readings, experiences and videos, and is continually updated to meet the ever changing operating environment.
“Fluor University is the first fully integrated and structured approach to career development where experience on Fluor projects provides practical learning supported by the courses available in the University to all employees, interns and certain client personnel working on our projects,” said Wesson. “Fluor embarked on a programme in 2014 to accelerate development and training by improving integration of local personnel into existing Fluor projects, as part of the project scope, thereby advancing their personal development.”
The training model is based on the University’s online, instructor-led and video distance-learning and is put together by the Fluor University team, in conjunction with experienced subject matter experts. This content is then incorporated into Fluor University and delivered through an online, instructor-led and video distance-learning methodology.
“The instructor led-training facilitators are functionally experienced experts from within the Fluor Global World, who have been accredited by the Fluor University as presenters. Courses include a variety of training in Engineering, Project Management, Project Controls, Supply Chain and Construction & Fabrication.”
“Our offices are designed in such a way to provide the required training facilities. Additional computers allow access to Fluor University’s online training and video conference facilities enable presenters from anywhere in the world, to deliver training locally,” added Wesson.
Training in South Africa dates back to the early 1970’s. A training project begun by Fluor to ensure a sufficiently skilled craft workforce, has developed into a fully-fledged, highly certificated training centre providing a better skilled craft workforce to work in the engineering, construction and maintenance industry in South Africa. To date, more than 35 000 individuals have been trained.
“We believe Fluor University is a valuable differentiator and we are committed to train and develop our employees, add value and to build a sustainable workforce in the countries where we operate.” concluded Wesson.
