The mineral wool industry is switching from traditional gas- or coal-fired cupola furnaces to electric furnaces for the melting of raw materials, in an attempt to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
To support this transformation Metso has introduced its Outotec electric mineral wool furnace, based on the company’s proprietary equipment used in various ferroalloy and slag cleaning applications.
“Demand for insulation materials is growing due to the tightening energy-efficiency requirements. At the same time, the insulation material industry is aiming for better efficiency and carbon neutrality in their production processes. Using Metso’s Outotec mineral wool furnace in the melting process is an efficient way to decrease CO2 emissions,” says Metso director: technology Tom Rönnberg.
Benefits of the furnace iclude:
- Decreased CO2 emissions
- High plant availability and long furnace campaign life
- Modular design that can be tailored for specific applications
- Safe furnace operation
Metso says that it can provide a complete plant solution, including the furnace, gas cleaning and other related proprietary technology, as well as process control, including different types of digital solutions such as the Process Advisor and Furnace Camera.
