As a female, being in the material handling industry requires strength, determination, and tenacity. We work in a highly technical field that can be intimidating to females who are not familiar with the environment.
However, in recent years there has been a seismic shift in the industry. Ten years ago, we didn’t have many female technicians, but today there is a concerted effort to bring young women into these roles.
It is important for businesses to create an environment that accepts, enables, and encourages women to step into this industry, grow in their roles and make a meaningful contribution.
Women will know they are successful in terms of gender equality when there is no specific day or month that needs to be celebrated to recognise their achievements. While we still have to talk about women being accepted into traditionally male-dominated roles, we know we still have a way to go.
