Stellenbosch University’s Bureau for Economic Research (BER) has appointed Professor Johann Kirsten as its sixth director and successor to Professor Ben Smit, who retired in December.
Kirsten, who would take up his new position on August 1, was leaving the University of Pretoria’s Department of Agricultural Economics, where he worked on agricultural policy and land reform.
“As the South African economy struggles to achieve sustained positive real growth and to create jobs and remove poverty and inequality, it is perhaps also time for the BER to venture into more policy-related research. I am sure the BER’s expertise and respected data and information could help South Africa in dealing with these critical questions,” said Kirsten.
