Advisian, the independent advisory business line of WorleyParsons, has appointed Dr Gary Mocke as its Managing principal of Ports and Marine Terminals, with responsibility for managing the Ports and Marine Terminal Advisory sub sector in Sub-Saharan African region and supporting the Middle East & North Africa Region.
Gary has over 28 years specialist expertise in port, marine terminal & coastal infrastructure planning & design. His professional career began as a site construction engineer, followed by a research and commercial engineering position with the large French power parastatal EDF in Paris.
He subsequently held a management position with the engineering research consultancy CSIR in South Africa, executing and directing coastal and port projects throughout Africa and the Indian Ocean along with developing a global reputation as a coastal & marine engineering expert through various applied research activities & publications.
Gary subsequently spent over a decade in the Middle East region, much of this period acting as principal Marine Advisor for the government of Dubai at the time of the massive marine and coastal reclamation developments in the region. Since 2007 he has held senior management and technical leadership roles with engineering consultants engaged in the bidding, planning and execution of port, power station, desalination and petrochemical facilities.
His port and marine terminal experience extends to both dry and liquid bulk facilities, where he has planned, executed, reviewed and managed numerous maritime projects across the globe. This includes several LNG and multiproduct fuel import and export studies, covering site selection, engineering and economic assessments.
Gary has also participated as a marine technical advisor together with interdisciplinary teams of financial, legal, banking and engineering experts. This includes his current membership of an international committee advising the government of The Netherlands on combined institutional-industry project investments in the vulnerable delta regions of the world. He further has extensive experience working directly with project developers as well as with EPC contractors, extending from joint project pursuits through to tendering and design along with independent technical reviews.
In recognition by his peers of his professional contributions to the field Gary was inducted in 2014 as a Diplomate into the prestigious Academy of Coastal, Ports & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He has lived in 8 different countries and is proficient in French.
