JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Western Australian uranium developer Toro Energy's MD and CEO, Dr Vanessa Guthrie, has been elected as the new chairperson of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the industry representative body announced on Wednesday.
Guthrie is the first woman to chair the MCA in its 40 year history.
Outgoing chairperson Andrew Michelmore said Guthrie had wide experience in the resources sector, deep knowledge of public policy and community engagement and would be an outstanding advocate for the sector.
Guthrie, who would serve for a two-year term, paid tribute to the leadership provided by Michelmore during a period of sharply lower commodity prices.
"Andrew has led the MCA during an extremely volatile and challenging period. Like the sector it represents, the MCA has refocused its efforts on core priority issues and delivered more with less.
“The reality is that a diversified mining industry is more important to the Australian economy than ever. The dividend of the mining investment boom is a much larger mining industry,” Guthrie said.
Guthrie had qualifications in geology, environment, law and business management, including a Doctor of Philosophy in Geology. She had experience in the mining industry in diverse roles including operations, environment, community and indigenous affairs, corporate development and sustainability.
