Entries are open for the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction’s (Saisc’s) Aveng Trident Steel Awards 2017 and Cadex Systems South Africa Photo Competition.
Saisc CEO Paolo Trinchero says, after the high standard of last year’s awards, there has been “extraordinary” expectation throughout the steel construction industry for this year’s awards. The Steel Awards will take place on September 13 in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.
The awards have secured respected industry stalwarts as sponsors, including main sponsor Aveng Trident Steel, popular vote sponsor Macsteel Service Centres, and photo competition sponsor Cadex Systems South Africa. NJR Steel and BSi Steel have also been confirmed as partner sponsors for this year.
Although the judges decide on the categories and winners based on the actual entries received, there are a number of awards and categories that have been confirmed by the sponsors of this year’s awards. The confirmed categories include the Aveng Trident Steel Awards 2017 Overall Winner, the ASTPM Tubular Category, the MiTek Light Steel Framing Category, the Global Roofing Solutions Metal Cladding Category, the Safintra Factory and Warehouse Category and a new category – the Safal Steel Innovation Category.
Clients, developers, architects, main contractors, project managers, structural engineers, fabricators, merchants, steelwork contractors, steel detailers, cladding suppliers and contractors or any other project team members may nominate a project for an award.
Judges award only structures in which Southern African steelwork contractors played a significant role and several factors are considered, including the importance of steel as a structural component of the project, the benefits achieved from using steel construction, aesthetic appeal, environmental and sustainability considerations, innovation in design, fabrication or construction, technical prowess required for realising the project, engineering expertise, quality of workmanship, tubular content, cladding workmanship, innovation, special solutions, size, speed and architectural finish.
Trinchero says: “The primary criterion for the Steel Awards is: Does the project illustrate what can be achieved with steel?”
The best photograph of an entered project also wins an award and effort is made to give all entered projects some publicity in the lead-up to the event and beyond.
Entries close on March 31.
